Gaumukh & Tapovan Trek

From the high town of Gangotri (3050 m), far in the north of Uttarakhand, nestled among giant trees and mountains and site of the ancient temple where pilgrims come to worship the river Ganges as Matta (Mother) Ganga, the trek leads up the Bhagirathi valley. After acclimatising to the altidude for a couple of days in Gangotri, the route begins easily, yet is filled with gorgeous scenery as the mountains reveal their mysteries to the intrepid hiker. On the second day (from Gangotri) you will reach Gaumukh (4225 m), the cave in the wall of ice that stretches across the valley that is the face of the massive and awe-inspiring Gangotri glacier, and from which gushes this inimitable river. From here you will continue to trek over the glacier which is slippery and constantly shifting, so great care must be taken. A final, near vertical ascent brings you to Tapovan (4460 m) a grassy oasis like plateau; defying description, this wondrous place, situated at the foot of so many peaks, really makes you think, “There God still exists.”
